The Last Caretaker Beginner's Guide
Essential tips and strategies for new players - master survival, crafting, and progression in your first 10 hours
Last updated: November 16, 2025
Welcome to The Last Caretaker - a survival crafting game where you restore humanity aboard a waterborne sanctuary. This guide covers everything new players need to know: essential early skills, scrap farming strategies, power grid basics, and efficient progression through your first 10 hours.
Getting Started
Your First 30 Minutes: The Foundation
The Last Caretaker drops you into Sanctuary Dock 37 with minimal equipment. Your immediate goals are simple but critical:
- Complete the tutorial objectives - Learn basic movement, boat controls, and your first crafting recipe (Electric Cable).
- Unlock Tier 2 skills immediately - Spend your starting skill points on Dismantle Tool, Electric Cable, and Lumilite. These three skills unlock the core gameplay loop.
- Explore the starting dock area - Look for furniture, machinery, and containers. Everything can be dismantled for scraps once you have the Dismantle Tool.
Understanding the Skill System
The Last Caretaker uses a 21-tier skill tree system. Each tier contains 2-8 blueprints unlocked with skill points (SP). You earn SP by:
- Completing objectives and milestones
- Discovering new locations and islands
- Crafting new items for the first time
- Reviving Lazarus Pods (human restoration objectives)
Critical insight: You cannot unlock everything in one playthrough. Plan your build around a focus area: Power Infrastructure, Combat, or Exploration. Use our Skill Planner tool to map out your progression path.
Early Progression (Hours 1-5)
Tier 2-3: Building Your Foundation
Your first major goal is establishing a sustainable power and crafting loop:
Essential Tier 2 Skills
- Electric Cable (1 SP) - Connects power modules to your boat systems. Required for any power grid.
- Lumilite (1 SP) - Entry-level solar panel generating 900 Wh during daylight. Your first power source.
- Dismantle Tool (0 SP) - Breaks down furniture and machinery into Parts and Scraps. Essential for material gathering.
Essential Tier 3 Skills
- Whisper (1 SP) - Wind turbine that generates power 24/7, unlike solar panels. Critical for nighttime electricity.
- Small Electric Engine Cylinder (1 SP) - Boat propulsion upgrade for faster exploration.
Tier 4: Unlocking Crafting Infrastructure
Tier 4 is a major milestone. You'll unlock the machines that transform scraps into usable materials:
- Recycler (2 SP) - Converts scrap items into base materials (Iron, Copper, Plastic, etc.). This machine is non-negotiable.
- Fabricator (2 SP) - Crafts components and modules once you have materials. Works alongside the Recycler.
- Small Battery (1 SP) - Stores 250 Wh of power for nighttime use. Build 1-2 immediately.
First Boat Upgrades: Building a Starter Power Grid
Your boat requires electricity to operate basic systems (lights, recycler, fabricator). A functional starter grid prevents blackouts during nighttime exploration.
Recommended Starter Grid (Tier 2-5)
- Generation: 2× Lumilite (1800 Wh total during day) + 1× Whisper (generates overnight)
- Storage: 2× Small Battery (500 Wh total storage)
- Connections: 6-8× Electric Cable to wire everything together
- Estimated build time: 3-4 hours of scrap farming and crafting
This grid supports a basic boat load (recycler, fabricator, lights) with 6-8 hours of night survival. Use our Power Calculator to verify your design before crafting expensive modules.
Common Power Mistakes to Avoid
- Only using solar panels - Your boat goes dark at night without wind turbines or batteries.
- Insufficient storage - 1× Small Battery (250 Wh) only provides ~2-3 hours of backup power for basic systems.
- Forgetting Electric Cables - Modules must be connected to your boat's grid. Budget 1 cable per module + extras for extenders.
Scrap Loop Basics
The "scrap loop" is your primary progression mechanic in The Last Caretaker. Master this cycle and you'll unlock new tiers rapidly:
- 1Explore and Dismantle - Use your Dismantle Tool on furniture, machinery, and containers in abandoned structures. Each item drops 1-3 scrap items.
- 2Process in Recycler - Return to your boat and feed scraps into the Recycler. Plastic Scraps → Plastic + Rubber. Metal Scraps → Iron + Copper.
- 3Craft Components - Use the Fabricator to create components (Battery Cell, Alloy Frame, Connector Ports). These are building blocks for modules.
- 4Build Modules - Combine components to craft power modules (Lumilite, Whisper), storage containers (FortiHold), or tools (Electric Pistol).
- 5Upgrade and Repeat - Install new modules on your boat, unlock higher tiers, and explore further islands for rare scraps.
Where to Farm Early-Game Scraps
Plastic Scraps & Rubber Scraps
Location: Sanctuary Dock 37 residential areas, furniture, ship interior panels
Yields: Plastic (common), Rubber (common) - Essential for Electric Cables, batteries, and basic components
Metal Scraps
Location: Industrial zones, docks, abandoned machinery
Yields: Iron (common), Copper (common) - Used in frames, wiring, and structural components
Fabric Scraps
Location: Residential areas, living quarters, bedding
Yields: Fabric (common) - Required for Consumable Batteries and filtering systems
For detailed scrap locations, yields, and farming routes, see our Scraps & Materials Guide.
Quick Tips for Success
💡 Prioritize Storage Early
Unlock StorTite (Tier 6) or FortiHold (Tier 11) containers as soon as possible. Inventory management becomes painful without dedicated storage modules.
⚡ Don't Skip Batteries
Even with wind turbines, you need batteries for power spikes (running Recycler + Fabricator simultaneously). Budget at least 500 Wh storage for Tier 5 gameplay.
🗺️ Mark Scrap-Rich Locations
Use the in-game map markers to tag high-density scrap zones. Return to these locations when you need specific materials (Tech Scraps for Gold, Aluminium Scraps for frames).
🔧 Craft in Batches
Plan your crafting sessions with our Resource Planner tool. Crafting 10× Electric Cable at once is more efficient than making them one-by-one as needed.
📊 Track Your Data Version
Game balance changes frequently in Early Access. Check the data version badges on our tools to ensure calculations match your current patch.
🎯 Specialize Your Build
You cannot unlock all 100+ skills in one playthrough. Choose a focus (Power Infrastructure, Combat, or Exploration) by Tier 6 and stick to it for maximum efficiency.
